Yes. But there is scanners that come with a free license. Its called Ranger by Silverbullet. Follow this link for a list of scanners supported. The scanners listed in blue come with a free license.

Now one more thing we would need to do. W'll need to make sure that it works with where ever we will be making our check deposits.
Edit: What I meant is, Lets say if we make our deposit through a login portal or directly to the bank website.

The cheapest way of getting a scanner is buying used on ebay. You can get a cannon cr-180 for around $70 including shipping and you don't have to buy a license for the cannon models as those come free with it.
